Overview

Bone marrow is the soft, spongy tissue found within the cavities of bones and is the body's principal site of blood cell formation, producing red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets from haematopoietic stem cells. It also supports immune system development and contains stromal and mesenchymal cells that contribute to tissue repair. Bone marrow is relevant to rheumatology and the broader study of musculoskeletal and immune-mediated disease because it is the source of immune effector cells, a reservoir of mesenchymal stem cells used in regenerative approaches, and a site affected by certain therapies and systemic disorders. Key topics include haematopoiesis and its regulation, the marrow microenvironment, stem-cell biology and transplantation, plasma-cell and lymphoproliferative disorders, anaemias, and the effects of cytotoxic drugs on blood cell production. This journal publishes research touching on several of these areas, including the effect of bone marrow and adipose mesenchymal stem cells on chemotherapy-induced intestinal injury, disruption of haematopoiesis by oxaliplatin, plasma-cell complications after bone marrow transplantation, monoclonal gammopathy, leukaemogenesis and cytogenetic abnormalities, refractory anaemia, mast-cell populations in macroglobulinaemia, and calcium orthophosphate scaffolds for bone tissue engineering.
