Overview
Dementia is a clinical syndrome of progressive decline in memory, reasoning, language, and other cognitive abilities that is severe enough to interfere with daily life, and it arises from several underlying neurological diseases, most commonly Alzheimer's disease. It is characterized by impairments in memory and problem-solving, reduced language and communication abilities, and changes in behavior and mood. Although age is the principal risk factor, dementia is not an inevitable part of aging, and it can also affect younger people. Early recognition supports planning, symptom management, and access to supportive care. Because no curative treatment exists for most forms, much research focuses on non-pharmacological interventions, behavioral and psychological symptoms, and caregiver support. Work in this journal examines several of these themes, including the use of virtual reality and videophone conversation for people with dementia, behavior management approaches for depression in dementia, non-pharmacological strategies for disrupted sleep in moderate-to-severe dementia, and the distinction between aggression and agitation. Other contributions explore links between depression, stressful life events, cortisol, and medial temporal lobe atrophy in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease, as well as caregiver knowledge gaps and engagement in cognitive stimulation. Network analyses of functional connectivity further illustrate efforts to understand the disease at a systems level and to inform therapeutic strategies.
