Overview
The limbic system is a complex network of brain structures located deep in the forebrain. It plays a crucial role in emotion, behavior, long-term memory and motivation. It works in concert with the hippocampus, hypothalamus, thalamus, and amygdala to interpret and respond to internal and external stimuli, including fear, pleasure, reward, and motivation. It helps to regulate emotions and links the brain’s centers of emotion, motivation, and memory. As a result, it’s essential for our ability to feel, to learn, and to recall past experiences. It’s also involved in the regulation of hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol, which can affect our moods. Damage to the limbic system can lead to memory deficiencies, mood disorders, and cognitive impairments.
