Overview

The centromere is a specialized region of a chromosome that plays a central role in cell division. It serves as the site where sister chromatids are held together and where the kinetochore, a protein structure, assembles to attach the chromosome to the spindle fibers that pull the chromatids apart during mitosis and meiosis. By ensuring that duplicated Chromosomes are correctly aligned and accurately distributed to daughter cells, the centromere is essential for maintaining genome stability; errors in this process can lead to the gain or loss of Chromosomes and contribute to developmental disorders and cancer. Although often depicted at the middle of a chromosome, the centromere's position varies among Chromosomes and helps define their structure. Research relevant to chromosome biology includes a study of the Chromosomes of a cellular slime mold, which examines chromosome organization in a model organism, and a case report of a pericentric inversion of chromosome 10, a structural rearrangement spanning the region around the centromere, inherited from a phenotypically normal mother. Such work illustrates how chromosome structure and rearrangements involving the centromeric region are studied and clinically evaluated.
