Overview
HIV-1 is the predominant type of human immunodeficiency virus responsible for the global AIDS pandemic. A lentivirus of the retrovirus family, it enters CD4-positive T helper cells via interaction with the CD4 receptor and chemokine co-receptors, reverse-transcribes its RNA genome into DNA that integrates into the host genome, and replicates to deplete immune cells over time. HIV-1 is characterized by high genetic diversity and rapid mutation, which complicate vaccine development and contribute to drug resistance. Its enzymes, including reverse transcriptase and protease, are principal targets of antiretroviral therapy. Research relevant to this journal addresses HIV-1 immunology, therapeutics, and clinical features. Studies include a hypothesis for raising HLA-E-restricted HIV-1-specific immune responses through T-cell vaccination, docking studies of phytocompounds against HIV-1 reverse transcriptase and protease, clinical and immunological effects of a phytotherapeutic in HIV-1-seropositive individuals, phytochemical approaches proposed to arrest HIV-1 progression, antioxidant status and CD4 count in patients on antiretroviral therapy, and dermatological presentations in HIV-1 infection. Related work examines adherence to pre-exposure prophylaxis, HIV self-testing, and co-infection effects on immune parameters. The journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical, immunological, and translational research, case reports, and images relevant to HIV-1 infection, its mechanisms, and its management.
