Overview
AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is the advanced stage of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), characterized by severe damage to the immune system that leaves the body vulnerable to opportunistic infections and certain cancers. HIV is transmitted through specific body fluids, principally via unprotected sexual contact, sharing of contaminated needles, and from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. Without treatment, HIV progressively depletes CD4 immune cells until the body can no longer defend itself; antiretroviral therapy can suppress the virus and prevent progression to AIDS, but no curative vaccine yet exists. Because AIDS remains a major global health challenge, much research focuses on prevention, education, and the social context of risk. Studies in this journal examine knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding HIV/AIDS among students, truck drivers, sex workers, and other populations, often in African settings; the use of sport and school-based programs for prevention; condom use and counseling and testing; status disclosure among people living with HIV; and theoretical frameworks for working with affected individuals. Key aspects of the field include modes of transmission, behavioral and biomedical prevention, stigma and disclosure, and efforts toward vaccine development and improved care.
