Biography
Dr. Janet H. Southerland is affiliated with Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, United States, where her research focuses on the relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease, early detection and interventions for oral cancer, and oral manifestations of HIV/AIDS. She previously served as Dean at the Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry from 2001โ2013 and as Chair of Hospital Dentistry, Chief of Oral Medicine, and Director of the UNC Hospitals Dental Clinic at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry from 2000โ2011. Dr. Southerland earned her D.D.S. from UNC School of Dentistry in 1989, along with a Ph.D. in Oral Biology and an M.P.H. from UNC, and holds bachelor's degrees in Dental Hygiene and Zoology from the same institution. Her most-cited publication, "Role of oral and gut microbiome in nitric oxide-mediated colon motility" (2018), has been cited 74 times, and she is an active member of the American Dental Association, American Association of Dental Research, International Association for Dental Research, and National Dental Association.
