Overview
RNA (ribonucleic acid) is a single-stranded nucleic acid built from ribonucleotides bearing the bases adenine, uracil, guanine, and cytosine, central to the flow of genetic information and to the regulation of gene expression. Functionally diverse classes include messenger RNA carrying coding information, transfer and ribosomal RNAs mediating translation, and regulatory non-coding species such as microRNAs, small interfering RNAs (the effectors of RNA interference), and circular RNAs. Through base-pairing and structural versatility, RNA participates in transcription, translation, catalysis, and post-transcriptional control, and serves as both biomarker and therapeutic agent. Research relevant to this area includes RNA-binding protein biology, molecular evolution of viral RNA gene homologues, template-independent synthesis of nucleic-acid libraries, functional nucleic-acid techniques for genetically modified organism detection, viral RNA in COVID-19, quantification of microRNAs by digital PCR and microfluidic assays for colorectal-cancer screening, fractal coding of biological sequence information, and the roles of plant circular RNAs. The journal publishes peer-reviewed work, grouped here under DNA And RNA Research, addressing the structure, function, synthesis, evolution, and detection of RNA, connecting studies of coding and non-coding RNA species, RNA-based diagnostics, and gene-regulatory mechanisms to the broad biological and clinical significance of ribonucleic acids.
