Overview
Primary healthcare is the first level of contact between individuals, families, and the health system, providing accessible, comprehensive, continuous, and coordinated care that addresses the majority of a population's health needs across the life course. It integrates health promotion, disease prevention, the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic conditions, rehabilitation, and referral, and is widely regarded as the foundation of equitable, cost-effective health systems. Its scope includes preventive services, management of non-communicable and infectious diseases, maternal and child health, and the appropriate use of medicines, often delivered by multidisciplinary teams that include physicians, clinical officers, and community health workers. In Family Medicine, primary healthcare emphasizes a sustained relationship with patients and their families. Research in this area examines services and quality of life for older persons with non-communicable diseases, antibiotic prescribing for respiratory infections, the effectiveness of national disease-control programs such as those for tuberculosis, and access and barriers to care among elderly and rural populations. Other work addresses immunization performance, colorectal cancer screening, implementation of maternal and child health care, the management of parasitic infections in school children, and sexual and reproductive health. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the delivery, access, quality, and outcomes of primary healthcare.
