Overview
Cattle are domesticated bovines raised for milk, meat, draught power and other products, and as a subject of agricultural and veterinary science they encompass animal health, reproduction, nutrition, breeding and production systems. Cattle Farming depends on managing infectious and parasitic disease, optimising fertility and reproductive performance, and improving productivity through breeding and husbandry, with implications for animal welfare, livelihoods and food security, particularly in smallholder and tropical systems. The field integrates veterinary medicine, animal husbandry, parasitology and reproductive physiology. Research in this area includes cytokine responses in cattle at different stages of natural Mycobacterium bovis infection and immune responses to BCG vaccination in calves; advanced virological and clinicopathological study of foot-and-mouth disease; the incidence and control of gastrointestinal parasites and tick infestations across breeds and management systems in Nigeria; parasitological examination of faecal samples from cattle and small ruminants; contagious bovine pleuropneumonia and bovine hydatidosis with its economic importance; reproductive performance, sex ratio and oestrous-synchronisation strategies to improve cow fertility; and the use of cattle dung in biogas production. Studies of fertiliser and cropping systems further connect livestock to integrated Farming. Across these contributions the field addresses the diagnosis and control of cattle disease, reproductive management, parasite and tick control, and productivity, supporting healthier, more productive herds within sustainable agricultural systems.
