Overview
Genetic analysis is the systematic study of genes, chromosomes, and DNA and RNA sequences to determine their structure, variation, inheritance, and contribution to phenotype. It encompasses a continuum of methods, from classical pedigree and linkage approaches that trace traits through families, to molecular techniques such as DNA sequencing, genotyping, and cytogenetics that resolve mutations, polymorphisms, and chromosomal rearrangements at high resolution. In clinical contexts, molecular analysis of specific genes identifies disease-causing variants, as in the characterization of metabolic disorders where mutations in enzyme-encoding genes such as those of the pterin and phenylalanine pathways explain biochemical phenotypes, or in inherited bleeding disorders attributable to defects in coagulation-factor genes. Cytogenetic investigation, including the detection of structural abnormalities and translocations, supports diagnosis and prognosis in haematological malignancies. Beyond medicine, genetic analysis underpins plant breeding and crop improvement, where it quantifies genetic diversity, constructs phylogenetic relationships, and links morphological and metabolic traits to underlying loci to guide precision selection. Population-level applications address inbreeding, heritability, and the distribution of variants across groups. Increasingly, genetic analysis is integrated with bioinformatics and pathway modelling, allowing researchers to interpret variants within networks and to connect genotype to molecular mechanism and to observable biological outcomes.
