Overview

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow in which immature white blood cells of the myeloid line are overproduced. It is driven by a characteristic genetic change, the Philadelphia chromosome, formed by a translocation between chromosomes 9 and 22 that creates the BCR-ABL fusion gene. The resulting abnormal protein keeps cells dividing without normal control. CML often progresses slowly through phases and has been transformed by targeted tyrosine kinase inhibitors that block BCR-ABL activity. Research in Hematology and Oncology Research engages CML directly. One qualitative study examines the drivers and barriers to medication adherence in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia, addressing a key factor in the success of long-term targeted therapy. Another describes the evolution of a Janus kinase 2 V617F-negative idiopathic myelofibrosis into Philadelphia-positive chronic myeloid leukemia, while a further case reports a patient with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance in whom the Philadelphia chromosome was detected. Together these contributions span clinical management, disease evolution, and diagnostic findings in CML. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to chronic myeloid leukemia, supporting clinicians, researchers, and students concerned with the biology and treatment of this hematologic malignancy.
