Overview

Medical anatomy is the study of the structure and organisation of the human body as it relates to clinical medicine. It encompasses the form, position, and relationships of organs, tissues, and systems, including the skeletal, muscular, circulatory, nervous, digestive, and respiratory systems, providing the foundation that physicians and surgeons use to understand normal structure, interpret imaging, perform procedures, and diagnose and treat disease and injury. Medical anatomy spans gross anatomy visible to the eye, microscopic and developmental aspects, and the clinical and surgical application of anatomical knowledge, and it remains a cornerstone of medical education and practice. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to medical anatomy published in the International Journal of Human Anatomy and related OpenAccessPub journals. On-topic work includes discussions of the perception and significance of basic sciences for clinical studies and of human anatomy as an inlet of medicine and surgery, a comparative study of mandibular neurovascular canals using cone-beam computed tomography, an examination of the clinical anatomy of the newborn cranial vault, and a description of the anatomical structures and approaches relevant to pericardiocentesis. Together these articles reflect the breadth of anatomical study, from teaching and comparative anatomy to imaging-based and procedure-related applications, underscoring the central role of anatomy in clinical medicine and surgery.
