Overview

Nerve fibers are the elongated axonal processes of neurons that transmit electrical signals throughout the nervous system, enabling communication between the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral tissues. Research published in the International Journal of Neuroimaging examines nerve fibers across multiple anatomical and clinical contexts. Studies have investigated the microanatomical organization of thalamic radiations, which are critical white matter pathways connecting the thalamus to cortical regions, as well as the communicating branches between cranial nerves such as the mental and facial nerves. Clinical investigations have explored how nerve fiber function relates to pain perception, including threshold variations in herpetic ophthalmic neuralgia and the therapeutic potential of auricular vagus nerve stimulation for chronic pain management. Additional work has examined capsaicin's effects on sensory nerve fibers in the context of inflammatory bowel disease and the electrogenesis of brainstem auditory pathways. The journal has also published theoretical perspectives on how central nervous system adaptations involving nerve fiber networks may influence chronic disease progression. This body of research underscores the importance of understanding nerve fiber anatomy, physiology, and pathology for advancing both diagnostic neuroimaging techniques and therapeutic interventions across neurological and systemic conditions.
