Overview

Iron is an essential trace mineral that plays a central role in human health, most notably as a component of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen from the lungs to tissues throughout the body. It is also part of myoglobin and numerous enzymes involved in energy production, DNA synthesis, and cellular metabolism. Adequate dietary iron is necessary to prevent iron-deficiency anemia, which causes fatigue, impaired cognition, reduced immunity, and complications during pregnancy and childhood development, while excessive iron can be harmful, making balanced intake important. Dietary iron comes in heme form from animal sources and non-heme form from plant foods, with absorption influenced by other dietary components. From a nutrition standpoint, assessing iron status and ensuring sufficient intake are key public-health concerns, particularly in populations at risk of deficiency. Research relevant to this area within the journal's scope includes study of biochemical and hematological markers of iron status in populations, analyses of the mineral content of foods such as mushrooms and grain blends, evaluation of mineral content in indigenous spices, and investigation of colon cancer risk among patients with iron deficiency, together illuminating both dietary sources and the clinical significance of iron. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to iron nutrition, micronutrient status, and health.
