Overview

Fisheries are the activities, industries, and scientific disciplines concerned with the harvesting, management, and study of fish and other aquatic organisms, whether captured from the wild or raised through aquaculture. They are a major source of food and dietary protein, supply essential nutrients, support livelihoods and economies, and are integral to the functioning of aquatic ecosystems. Fisheries science addresses the biology and population dynamics of harvested species, the impacts of fishing and environmental change, and the management strategies needed to keep harvests sustainable and ecosystems healthy. Research in this journal spans both capture fisheries and aquaculture, including work on adopting a wider, ecosystem-oriented approach to fisheries management, factors adversely affecting Atlantic salmon populations using a Scottish river as an example, the adverse effects of underwater sound on fishes and invertebrates, the diversity of flatfishes in Myanmar, and ecosystem-based management of Antarctic krill to support whales and other predators. Studies of fish culture, including obstacles to fish farming and feed and fertilization strategies for tilapia and carp, address aquaculture production. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to fisheries science, aquatic resource management, aquaculture, and the ecology of fish and other aquatic organisms.
