Overview

Marine ecosystems are communities of living organisms together with the physical and chemical environment of the ocean and other saltwater bodies, all interacting as a functioning system. They range from coastal habitats such as estuaries, mangroves, seagrass meadows, and coral reefs to the vast open ocean and the deep sea, and they support an enormous diversity of life from microscopic plankton to the largest marine mammals. Within these systems, energy and nutrients flow through food webs, and the interactions among species and with conditions such as temperature, salinity, light, and currents determine the productivity and stability of the whole. Marine ecosystems provide essential services to people, including food, climate regulation, oxygen production, coastal protection, and the support of biodiversity, and they offer habitat for many species, including those that are rare or endangered. Because they are sensitive to pressures such as overfishing, pollution, and climate change, sustaining marine ecosystems requires careful, ecosystem-based management that considers the connections among species and processes. Research relevant to this topic includes work on broader approaches to fisheries management and on the importance of supporting key links in the pelagic food web, such as the relationship between krill and whales. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research in the International Marine Science Journal relevant to marine ecosystems and their conservation.
