Overview

The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest of Earth's oceans, covering roughly a third of the planet's surface and stretching from the Arctic in the north to the Southern Ocean, bordered by the Americas to the east and Asia and Australia to the west. It contains the planet's greatest ocean depths, a vast array of islands, and an extraordinary diversity of marine habitats, from coral reefs and coastal waters to the open pelagic zone and deep-sea features such as trenches and seamounts. The Pacific plays a major role in global climate, weather patterns, and ocean circulation, and supports food webs and fisheries of enormous ecological and economic importance. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the Pacific Ocean and marine ecosystems published in the International Marine Science Journal and related OpenAccessPub titles. On-topic work includes a study on the global importance of supporting the krill-to-whale component of the pelagic food web associated with migrations following deep-sea seamounts, which addresses open-ocean ecological connections of the kind that characterise the vast pelagic environments of the Pacific. Together with the journal's broader coverage of marine science, this material reflects the study of ocean ecosystems, food webs, and the marine life that depends on the world's largest body of water.
