Overview
Poultry are domesticated birds raised for meat, eggs, feathers, and other products, comprising chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and related species. As a foundation of global animal agriculture, poultry science integrates several technical domains. Poultry nutrition and feed efficiency address dietary formulation and the use of feed additives, including exogenous enzymes such as phytase, which liberates phosphorus bound in phytate, improving mineral availability and reducing phosphorus excretion. Poultry health and infectious disease cover bacterial, viral, and parasitic conditions, among them avian mycoplasmosis caused by Mycoplasma species, colibacillosis driven by avian pathogenic Escherichia coli, and coccidiosis caused by Eimeria parasites that damage the intestinal mucosa of broilers. Food safety of poultry products is a further priority, addressing microbial contamination of eggs and meat, zoonotic pathogen transmission, and hygienic processing. Husbandry, housing, biosecurity, and welfare considerations shape productivity, disease control, and product quality across production systems. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to these areas, with work spanning poultry nutrition and enzyme supplementation, poultry infectious disease including mycoplasmosis, avian pathogenic E. coli, and coccidiosis, and microbiological food safety of poultry-derived products. Together these themes reflect the applied veterinary, nutritional, and food-science scope of contemporary poultry research.
