Call for papers

Journal of Behavior Therapy And Mental Health welcomes submissions throughout the year from researchers, clinicians and multidisciplinary teams working across behavior therapy and mental health.

Regular submissions are handled as they are received throughout the year.

Where a themed collection is open, it is listed on the Special Issues page. A collection is an additional route, never an easier one.

These are the areas where the journal believes additional work would make the most difference to the field it serves. A manuscript outside them is considered on exactly the same terms.

Mechanisms of change

Work on the processes that carry the effect of a behavioral or psychological intervention, including mediation and moderation analyses reported as substantive contributions rather than as afterthoughts.

Treatment in routine settings

Effectiveness, adaptation and implementation of behavioral and cognitive treatment outside the university clinic, including delivery by non-specialists.

Measurement that supports decisions

Instrument development and validation, routine outcome monitoring, and work on what a change on a scale means clinically rather than only statistically.

Services, access and workforce

Help-seeking, unmet need, task-sharing, provider wellbeing and the organization of care, particularly where it connects to what treatment delivers.

Prevention and early intervention

Behavioral and psychological work directed at preventing disorder, and at the behavior that shapes physical health.

Digitally delivered intervention

Internet-delivered and mobile treatment, remote delivery, and the human support and engagement questions that determine whether any of it works in practice.

Single-case and small-N designs

Rigorous single-case experimental work, which the field under-publishes and which this journal reads seriously.

Null and unfavorable results

Well-conducted studies whose intervention did not work as expected. They are as useful to the field as the ones that did.

Most mental health care is delivered in settings the treatment literature rarely describes. Work from those settings is particularly welcome.

• Low-resource services, and services without specialist provision
• Non-specialist and task-shared delivery
• Populations outside the university clinic and the student sample
• Countries and health systems under-represented in the intervention literature
• Older adults, and people with severe or long-standing difficulty
• Work led by researchers early in their careers

A manuscript is in scope when it makes a substantive contribution to behavior therapy or mental health: understanding processes or determinants, characterizing conditions and experiences, developing assessment, evaluating prevention or treatment, or studying recovery and services. A subject alone does not establish fit.
