A special issue takes one part of the journal’s remit and works it in depth, with guest editors who know the subject and a call aimed at the people doing that work.

Propose a Special Issue
What a proposal sets out
International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine welcomes proposals for focused collections that address important questions across exposures encountered at work and in the wider environment, their effects on human health, and the surveillance, prevention and clinical practice that follow. Researchers with relevant expertise are invited to send a proposal to the editorial office at [email protected].
- The gapThe occupational or environmental health question the collection would address, and why a focused collection answers it better than individual submissions.
- Guest editorsWho would edit it, their expertise in the subject, and how the topic is covered between them.
- CoverageThe kinds of work the collection would carry, drawn from the journal’s remit rather than narrowed to one method.
- Editorial workflowHow peer review and decisions would run, and how conflicts among guest editors would be handled.
- ReportingAny data or reporting standards contributors would be asked to meet.
- ReachHow the call would reach the occupational health societies, institutions or practitioners the subject concerns.
Scope
A collection is narrower; the journal is not
A special issue deepens one area of the remit. The journal continues to publish across all of it, and a manuscript that fits the journal but not a current collection is submitted in the ordinary way.

Safeguards
How a collection is reviewed
Special issue submissions follow the journal’s ordinary editorial process. Guest editors curate the subject; the journal keeps the standards.
All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal’s scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Decisions remain independent of fees, services, memberships, and editorial or reviewer roles.
Guest editors declare their interests and step aside from any manuscript they are connected to, which is then handled by a journal editor. Inclusion in a collection is decided by the same assessment as any other submission.
