Article Processing Charges

The Journal of Medical Informatics and Decision Making publishes every article open access, free to read at the point of use. Publication is funded by a charge that applies after a manuscript has been accepted. This page states the rates, when the charge applies, what it covers, and the terms that apply if a manuscript is withdrawn.

01 · Published rates

The article processing charge, by author category.
CategoryChargeApplies to
Standard USD 2,100 Accepted manuscripts, all article types.
Student or trainee USD 1,575 Accepted manuscripts whose first author is a student or trainee, confirmed by their institution.
When it applies
After acceptance. Nothing is charged at submission, and no charge arises for a manuscript that is not accepted.
Currency
United States dollars. Any bank or currency-conversion charge is met by the payer.
Taxes
Where tax is due on a publication charge, it is applied to the invoice according to the payer's jurisdiction and shown as a separate line.
Other charges
None. There is no submission fee, no page charge, no color-figure charge and no charge for supplementary files.

02 · The charge and the decision

Editorial decisions are independent of an author's ability to pay. The charge is raised only after a decision has been made, by staff who take no part in making it.

Screening, reviewer selection, review and the decision are governed by the Editorial Policies, which state the criteria applied. Payment does not affect whether a manuscript is reviewed, how quickly it is handled, how it is presented after publication, or any editorial judgment about it.

03 · What the charge covers

ServiceWhat it means
Editorial handlingScreening, reviewer identification and invitation, management of the review, and the editorial decision.
ProductionCopyediting, typesetting and preparation of the published PDF, HTML and JATS XML.
Figures and supplementary filesPreparation and hosting of figures, tables, code and data files submitted with the article.
Identifier registrationRegistration of a Crossref DOI and deposit of the article's metadata against it.
Hosting and preservationPermanent open-access hosting, and inclusion under the publisher's digital-preservation arrangements.

What that produces, and where the resulting records can be checked, is described on the Indexing and Discoverability page.

04 · Fee-relief inquiries

Where the charge is an obstacle, authors are invited to write to the editorial office before submitting. Requests are considered on their circumstances, separately from the editorial process and by staff who take no part in it, so a request cannot influence the assessment of the manuscript and the assessment cannot influence the request.

Write to [email protected] with the working title of the manuscript and the intended article type.

05 · Invoicing and payment

  1. Acceptance

The editorial decision is issued. Only then does a charge arise.

  2. Billing details

The corresponding author supplies the billing name, address and any purchase-order or institutional reference the payer requires on the invoice.

  3. Invoice

The publisher issues an invoice for the applicable rate, with any tax shown separately.

  4. Payment

Payment is made by the method stated on the invoice. Institutional and funder payment arrangements are handled through the billing contact.

  5. Production

The article proceeds through production to publication under CC BY 4.0, with its DOI registered.

Questions about an invoice, an institutional arrangement or a payment method go to [email protected].

06 · Withdrawing a manuscript

Authors should contact the editorial office promptly and wait for written confirmation before submitting the work elsewhere.

Manuscripts withdrawn within 3 days of submission are not subject to a withdrawal charge.

Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a withdrawal charge equal to 30% of the journal's APC.

Authors must receive official withdrawal confirmation before submitting the manuscript to another journal.
