Membership
An optional, annual arrangement through which researchers and clinicians support the journal’s open-access publishing. It is administered separately from submitting, reviewing and editing.
What membership supports
Every article is free to read. Publishing an accepted article is funded by the article processing charge, and membership contributes to the same work: editorial administration, production, DOI registration and permanent open-access hosting.
Members receive journal communications, including issue alerts and notice of calls for papers, at the same time as they are published.
How membership relates to review
A member’s manuscript is screened, reviewed and decided exactly as any other, by the handling editor and independent reviewers, on the criteria published in the Editorial Policies.
Membership confers no advantage in the review or acceptance of a member’s own work. The same editorial procedures and appointment criteria apply to members and other contributors.
Why the separation matters
So a reader can trust that what is published was judged on its science.
A journal’s value to its field rests on the decisions behind what it publishes being made on the science. The journal therefore keeps membership, payment and editorial judgment structurally apart: the editorial office administers membership, and the handling editor sees a manuscript without reference to it.
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.

Current categories and terms
So every term is confirmed in writing before payment.
Membership categories, the annual fee for each, the term it runs for, what it includes, and any fee relief that applies to an article processing charge are confirmed by the editorial office before any payment is taken.

Applying
So an applicant knows what is asked and who decides.
Applications are welcome from people actively engaged in nephrology research, clinical care, dialysis services, transplantation or a related field of kidney medicine, at any career stage. Each application is assessed by the journal, and the office confirms the outcome in writing.
An application gives:
- your name, current position and institution
- your professional or academic qualification
- a short statement of your research or clinical interests in kidney medicine
- your agreement to the journal’s publication-ethics standards
