Overview

Colorectal cancer is a malignancy of the colon and rectum that typically develops from precancerous polyps in the bowel lining and can become life-threatening when not detected and treated early. It is one of the most common cancers and presents with symptoms such as rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits, and abdominal pain or discomfort. Screening methods including colonoscopy and faecal immunochemical testing allow early-stage detection, and surgical resection remains a cornerstone of curative treatment, increasingly performed using minimally invasive (laparoscopic) approaches. In the context of surgical practice, colorectal cancer is significant for the technical, perioperative, and outcome considerations surrounding tumour resection, including emergency presentations. Key aspects include screening and early detection, operative strategy, perioperative risk assessment, and management of resistance and recurrence. Research published in this journal addresses prerequisites for emergency laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer, preoperative and postoperative cardiac risk prediction during cancer resection, population-based and company-based screening programmes, molecular regulation and gene-expression changes such as VCAM-1, mechanisms of treatment resistance, and chemoprevention, reflecting attention to both the surgical management of the disease and the diagnostic and biological context that informs it.
