Overview
A fistula is an abnormal passageway that forms between two epithelialised surfaces, such as two hollow organs or an organ and the skin, and may be congenital or acquired through infection, inflammation, trauma, or surgery. Fistulae are classified by the structures they connect and can produce symptoms ranging from abnormal drainage and pain to infection and the diversion of fluids and gases along non-physiological routes. In nephrology, surgically created arteriovenous fistulae provide vascular access for haemodialysis, while pathological fistulae elsewhere in the body may require interventional or surgical closure. Research collected here reflects this breadth, including arteriovenous fistula in a patient with aberrant radial artery, duodenocolic fistula complicating gastrointestinal tuberculosis, tracheoesophageal fistula in a preterm infant, and carotid-cavernous fistula with subarachnoid haemorrhage. Further contributions examine bladder fistula following injury, the use of a cardiac septal occluder in enteroatmospheric fistula, embolisation of perimedullary arteriovenous fistulae, coronary artery-left ventricular fistulas, and volume assessment in haemodialysis patients. Together these peer-reviewed studies span congenital and acquired fistulae across vascular, gastrointestinal, respiratory, neurological, and urological systems, along with the interventional and surgical approaches used in their management.
