Acid-fast staining is a differential laboratory technique used to identify microorganisms that retain certain dyes even after treatment with acid-alcohol solutions, a property conferred by high lipid content in their cell walls. This method is particularly valuable for detecting mycobacteria and some parasitic organisms that resist conventional staining procedures. Research published in New Developments in Chemistry has examined the application of acid-fast staining techniques in veterinary and public health contexts, specifically investigating the detection of protozoan parasites in domestic pigeon populations.
