Overview

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways characterized by variable, often reversible airflow obstruction, bronchial hyperresponsiveness, and underlying inflammation involving eosinophils, mast cells, T-helper lymphocytes, and structural airway cells. Clinically it presents with recurrent wheeze, cough, chest tightness, and breathlessness that fluctuate over time and with triggers such as allergens, respiratory infections, exercise, cold air, tobacco smoke, and certain drugs, including aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents in susceptible individuals. Persistent inflammation can drive airway remodeling, and asthma frequently coexists with allergic rhinitis and other atopic and respiratory conditions, supporting a unified-airways perspective. Diagnosis and phenotyping rely on spirometry and reversibility testing, measures of airway inflammation such as fractional exhaled nitric oxide, and assessment of allergic sensitization, while management combines trigger avoidance, inhaled corticosteroids and bronchodilators, and control of contributing comorbidities. Risk factors of particular relevance include obesity, environmental and occupational exposures, and tobacco use. The peer-reviewed research assembled here reflects these dimensions, including nutritional and obesity-related risk factors in adolescents, contributors to asthma at the community level, multidisciplinary diagnosis using nasal cytology and exhaled nitric oxide, cross-reactive hypersensitivity to NSAIDs, severity classification in obstructive airway disease, and tobacco-control programming relevant to airway health.
