Overview
Respiration is the biochemical process by which organisms exchange gases with their environment and convert nutrients into energy at the cellular level. Research published in this journal addresses respiration across multiple biological scales, from microbial metabolism to ecosystem-level carbon cycling. Studies have examined soil respiration dynamics in temperate forest ecosystems, particularly how precipitation events influence carbon dioxide release from soil microbial communities. Additional work has explored bacterial respiratory enzymes, including benzoate 1,2-dioxygenase activity in Rhodococcus species that degrade aromatic compounds through oxidative pathways. Agricultural research has investigated how symbiotic fertilization and mycorrhizal associations affect plant-soil respiratory interactions, using spectroscopic methods to monitor metabolic activity in crops including tomatoes, corn, potatoes, olives, and grapes. Clinical studies have examined respiratory function in the context of laryngeal surgery outcomes and explored the role of carbon dioxide accumulation in neurological phenomena. Recent work has addressed redox enzymes involved in cellular respiration and oxidative stress responses. This research matters because respiration links individual organism metabolism to broader biogeochemical cycles, influences agricultural productivity and soil health, and remains central to understanding both microbial ecology and human physiological processes.
