Overview
A biopsy is the removal of a sample of tissue or cells from the body for microscopic, immunohistochemical, or molecular examination to establish or confirm a diagnosis, characterize disease, and guide treatment. Techniques range from fine-needle aspiration cytology and core-needle sampling to incisional and excisional procedures, and the choice depends on the lesion, anatomical site, and clinical question. Histopathological and cytological analysis of biopsy material remains a cornerstone of diagnosis, particularly in oncology, where it determines malignancy, grade, and subtype, and it is increasingly complemented by ancillary techniques. Research in this area examines diagnostic applications across diverse tissues, including markers for high-grade prostate cancer in patients undergoing prostatic biopsy, clinicopathologic analysis of granulomatous gastritis, fine-needle aspiration cytology of lymphoid lesions and the interpretation of atypical or suspicious categories, and morphological features of testicular biopsies in infertility. Studies compare biopsy with non-invasive methods, including Doppler ultrasonography for post-transplant complications, and explore alternative or adjunct approaches such as trace-element analysis of nodular tissue and biochemical screening for cancer. Findings on conditions ranging from gastric carcinoma and refractory anaemia to neurofibroma and tuberculous lesions illustrate the breadth of biopsy-based pathology. By linking tissue sampling to precise diagnosis, the field underpins clinical decision-making. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to biopsy and diagnostic pathology across organs and disease types.
