Overview

Sleep disorders treatment encompasses the diagnosis and management of conditions that disrupt the timing, duration, quality, or physiology of sleep, including insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, and circadian rhythm disorders. Because disturbed sleep is linked to cardiometabolic, cognitive, and psychiatric morbidity, effective treatment aims both to relieve symptoms and to reduce downstream health risk. Management is tailored to the underlying disorder and may combine behavioral, pharmacologic, device-based, and physiological approaches. Research in this domain examines non-pharmacological and stimulation-based interventions, including peripheral somatosensory stimulation and pulsed magnetic therapy, alongside the mechanistic role of the endocannabinoid system in circadian and sleep regulation. Studies of narcolepsy with and without cataplexy in pediatric populations, delayed sleep phase syndrome across cultural and genetic backgrounds, and sleep disturbance in autism illustrate the breadth of conditions addressed, while dietary and behavioral contributors such as ultra-processed food consumption, loneliness, and bedtime procrastination are also considered. Objective assessment of sleep quality supports diagnosis and evaluation of response. The journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical trials, interventional studies, and reviews addressing the assessment and treatment of insomnia, sleep-disordered breathing, narcolepsy, and circadian and behavioral sleep disturbances across the lifespan.
