Overview

Blood vessels are the tubular conduits of the circulatory system that transport blood throughout the body, comprising arteries that carry blood from the heart, veins that return it, and the capillaries that mediate exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste at the tissue level. Their walls are organized into layers, the intima lined by endothelium, the smooth-muscle-containing media, and the connective-tissue adventitia, with composition varying by vessel type to suit pressure, flow, and exchange functions. The endothelium regulates vascular tone, permeability, haemostasis, and leukocyte trafficking, while angiogenesis and vascular remodelling govern growth, repair, and disease. Vascular pathology spans atherosclerosis, thrombosis, aneurysm, malformation, and abnormal proliferation, and the integrity of vessels is central to perfusion and to inflammatory and neoplastic processes. The peer-reviewed work assembled here engages these themes within thrombosis and vascular biology: cerebral vasculopathy in Moyamoya disease, leukocyte recruitment and migration in COVID-19 lung damage, retinopathy of prematurity as a disorder of retinal vascular development, fibrin-network changes in pulmonary and renal microthrombi, and effects of irradiation on reparative tissue vascularization. Across these studies blood vessels appear in the contexts of microvascular injury, thrombosis, abnormal angiogenesis, and inflammatory vascular responses. The collection frames the vasculature as the structural foundation of perfusion and a primary site of thrombotic, inflammatory, and developmental disease.
