Overview
Sexual desire disorders are a group of conditions characterized by a persistent or recurrent lack of sexual interest or desire that causes personal distress or difficulty in relationships. The most recognized among them is hypoactive sexual desire disorder, in which an individual experiences little or no spontaneous interest in sexual activity and limited responsiveness to sexual cues. These disorders can affect people of any age and gender, and in women they have been studied extensively in relation to overall well-being and quality of life. Their causes are typically multifactorial, encompassing hormonal changes, relationship and psychological factors, stress, depression, certain medications, and underlying medical conditions, and assessment requires distinguishing a genuine disorder from normal variation in desire. Management may involve psychological and relationship-focused therapies, addressing contributing medical or hormonal factors, and, in selected cases, pharmacological treatment. As a journal focused on Women's Reproductive Health, this page situates sexual desire disorders within the broader study of female sexual and reproductive well-being. Related peer-reviewed work indexed here includes a systematic review of the use of bupropion for hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women, which directly addresses a treatment approach for this condition. The page assembles encyclopedic reference information on sexual desire disorders consistent with the journal's reproductive health scope.
