Aims & Scope

The Journal of Human and Animal Intestines (JHAI) publishes multidisciplinary research on intestinal structure, function, pathology, and therapeutics across human and animal models. We focus on mechanistic studies of gastrointestinal physiology, microbiome interactions, digestive disorders, and translational innovations in intestinal health.

We do NOT consider: Research focused exclusively on non-intestinal organs (liver, pancreas as primary focus), systemic diseases without intestinal involvement, or purely computational studies without experimental validation.

Typical Fit: Comparative studies of intestinal adaptation in different species, or translational research validating rodent IBD models for human therapy development.

Cross-Disciplinary Integration

We welcome research integrating intestinal biology with nutrition science, pharmacology, bioengineering (intestinal organoids, tissue engineering), and computational modeling of gut physiology. Studies must maintain clear intestinal focus.

Methodological Innovations

Novel techniques in intestinal imaging (confocal, multiphoton microscopy), omics approaches (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics), advanced endoscopy, and AI-assisted diagnostics for gastrointestinal pathology are encouraged.

Nutritional Gastroenterology

Research on diet-gut interactions, nutritional interventions for intestinal disorders, intestinal hormone regulation, and nutrient absorption mechanisms. Studies must demonstrate direct intestinal effects.

Intestinal Pharmacology

Drug development targeting intestinal disorders, intestinal drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics of oral therapeutics, and novel drug delivery systems for gastrointestinal diseases.

Note: Emerging area submissions undergo additional editorial review to ensure methodological rigor and clear intestinal relevance. Purely computational or theoretical work requires experimental validation.

Out of Scope: Explicit Exclusions

  • Hepatology & Pancreatic Research (Primary Focus) Studies where liver or pancreas is the primary organ of investigation. Exception: Research on hepatobiliary-intestinal interactions or pancreatic-intestinal axis with substantial intestinal component.
  • Esophageal & Gastric Disorders (Exclusive Focus) Research limited to upper GI tract without intestinal involvement. Exception: Studies on gastroduodenal interactions or upper-to-lower GI transit mechanisms.
  • Systemic Diseases Without Intestinal Manifestation Cardiovascular, renal, or pulmonary diseases lacking demonstrated intestinal pathology or gut-organ axis involvement.
  • Pure Computational Studies Without Validation In silico modeling, bioinformatics analyses, or AI algorithms without experimental or clinical validation in intestinal systems.
  • General Nutrition Science Dietary studies without mechanistic investigation of intestinal effects, or nutritional epidemiology lacking gastrointestinal outcome measures.

Editorial Standards & Requirements

Reporting Guidelines

All submissions must adhere to discipline-specific reporting standards:

CONSORT STROBE PRISMA ARRIVE STARD

Clinical trials must be prospectively registered (ClinicalTrials.gov, ISRCTN, etc.).

Data Transparency

We require data availability statements. Raw data, code, and protocols should be deposited in recognized repositories (GenBank, Dryad, Figshare, GitHub).

Microbiome studies must deposit sequence data in NCBI SRA or EBI ENA.

Ethics & Integrity

Human studies require IRB/ethics committee approval. Animal research must comply with ARRIVE guidelines and institutional IACUC approval.

We follow COPE guidelines and screen all submissions with plagiarism detection software.

Preprint Policy

We accept submissions previously posted on recognized preprint servers (bioRxiv, medRxiv, arXiv). Authors must disclose preprint DOI at submission.
