The Journal of Medical Informatics and Decision Making (JMID) publishes peer-reviewed, open-access research in medical and health informatics and healthcare decision science. Clinical informatics is a core domain, alongside population, consumer and research informatics. Decision science includes how healthcare choices are made, supported and evaluated, with or without a new digital system.

Interdisciplinary work fits when its contribution to medical or health informatics, or healthcare decision science, is central and substantive. Molecular analysis alone and generic computing that merely uses a medical dataset do not establish fit.

02 · From information to decision
Informatics studies how health information is represented, exchanged and used. Healthcare decision science examines choices, preferences, uncertainty and decision quality. These domains intersect in decision support, but either can provide a substantive contribution. The pathway below illustrates one informatics application; it is not a required sequence for every submission.

Capture
Where the information comes from: the record, the device, the register, the note. Manuscripts define patient cohorts, inclusion criteria, and data provenance.

Represent
How events are defined, coded and exchanged — terminology, common data models, and the data-quality work that decides whether a downstream rule fires on the right patients.

Compute
The method applied to that information. Model performance is reported with appropriate baselines and confidence intervals, and bias, fairness and generalizability across care settings are addressed.

Decide
The decision the work supports, the clinician, nurse or pharmacist making it, and how a recommendation is delivered and acted upon inside the workflow.

Evaluate
What changed in use: adoption, usability, workflow, safety, or care quality — with failure modes and limitations described transparently.
Where machine learning fits
Machine learning and predictive modeling fit where they advance medical or health informatics or address a defined healthcare decision. Evaluation should support the claim: methods may be assessed without deployment, while claims about clinical utility require evidence about use. Data provenance, suitable comparators, uncertainty and limitations should be reported as applicable.
03 · Editorial handling
ON SUBMISSION — All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. IF the manuscript meets the journal's scope and minimum requirements — THEN it proceeds to independent peer review. REVIEW MODEL — Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. REVIEWERS — Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts. DECISION — Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. ON ACCEPTANCE — Article processing charge USD 2,100; USD 1,575 for student and trainee authors. Charged after acceptance only, and independent of the editorial decision.
Independence
Editorial decisions are independent of any fee, service, membership or role. Editors recuse themselves from decisions on their own submissions; those manuscripts are handled independently. Every article is published under CC BY 4.0 and authors retain copyright.

06 · Research integrity requirements
Medical informatics research is carried out on identifiable patient information and on models that make claims about people. The requirements below apply to submitted work and are stated in full in the Editorial Policies.
Ethics approval and consent
Studies involving patient data require documented approval from an institutional ethics committee or IRB. Consent is documented for prospective studies, with waiver justification for retrospective data analysis.
Patient data protection
Methods for de-identifying patient data must be clearly described. US-based studies demonstrate HIPAA-compliant data handling; EU-based studies comply with the General Data Protection Regulation.
Algorithmic accountability
Studies developing clinical decision support tools or AI-driven diagnostics address algorithmic bias, fairness across demographic groups, interpretability, and appropriate human oversight in deployment.
Data and code availability
Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement. Custom algorithms and models should be deposited in a public repository, documented well enough to replicate the computational methods.
Trial registration
Interventional clinical trials must be registered in an accepted public trial registry at or before the first participant provides consent for enrollment. The registry name, registration number, and registration date must be reported in the manuscript.
Disclosure and correction
Authors disclose financial relationships with health IT companies, EHR vendors or AI companies whose products are discussed, and any use of AI tools in writing or analysis. Corrections, expressions of concern and retractions follow COPE guidance and stay linked to the article they concern.

The Journal of Medical Informatics and Decision Making (JMID) publishes peer-reviewed, open-access research in medical and health informatics and healthcare decision science. Clinical, population, consumer and research informatics, formal decision analysis, shared decision making and methodological research are included when the contribution is substantive.
Does JMID publish artificial intelligence and machine learning research?
Yes, where the contribution to medical or health informatics, or healthcare decision science, is substantive and evaluated appropriately. New methods do not require deployment in every case; a medical dataset alone does not establish fit.
What is the article processing charge?
